Teaching Higher Education Online

The Researcher

Irene is a doctoral candidate at Walden University, pursuing a PhD in Educational Technology and Design. She is doing her dissertation on the online teaching experiences of community college professors during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Irene attempted to recruit participants by posting to Facebook groups, but no one signed up.

  • Format In-depth interview
  • Interview duration 45 minutes
  • Venue Zoom video conference
  • Number of participants 10
  • Incentive ⭐ $75 gift card ⭐

The Solution

Qualitative met with Irene to discuss her research study and sent her a proposal for participant recruitment. After she decided to move forward with Qualitative, we guided her in setting up her account and creating a participant screener that minimized response bias.

Irene paid the invoice for participant recruitment and Qualitative launched a recruitment funnel for her study. The recruitment funnel did not include an incentive initially, and then a $45 incentive was added. Neither was effective at recruiting community college professors, however, so Irene obtained approval from her IRB to use a $75 incentive. As she conducted interviews, 1 participant needed to be rescheduled and 2 were removed due to not confirming their interview time. Irene completed all 10 interviews in just under 3 weeks after raising her incentive.

The Outcome

By the end of the study, Qualitative had recruited 10 community college professors. 6 had been professors for 5-10 years, 2 had been professors for 10-15 years, and 2 had been professors for more than 20 years. There were 8 females and 2 males. All participants were U.S. residents. 3 participants were from the Northeast, 3 from the Southeast, 1 from the Midwest, 1 from the Southwest, and 2 from the West.
