Critical Thinking In Higher Education

The Researcher

Ingrid is a doctoral candidate at Grand Canyon University, pursuing a PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. She is doing her dissertation on the role of critical thinking in higher education.

The Challenge

Ingrid attempted to recruit participants through SurveyMonkey and Facebook, but neither platform led to success.

  • At an institution of higher education (4-year colleges, 2-year colleges, community colleges, for-profit universities, technical colleges, online universities)
  • Location: United States
  • English proficiency: Advanced or Native

Study Details

  • Format In-depth interview
  • Interview duration 60 minutes
  • Venue Zoom video conference
  • Number of participants 12
  • Incentive ⭐ $100 gift card ⭐

The Solution

Qualitative met with Ingrid to discuss her research study and sent her a proposal for participant recruitment. After she decided to move forward with Qualitative, we guided her in setting up her account and creating a participant screener that minimized response bias. We then simulated recruitment and came back to Ingrid with a quote for participant recruitment. Per Ingrid's request, the recruitment was conducted in 3 batches of 4 participants.

The first batch of 4 interviews was conducted over 3 days, the 2nd batch of 4 interviews took 9 days, and the last batch of 4 interviews took 5 days. All participants completed their interview at the scheduled time. Two participants withdrew and chose not to participate. One participant requested to be rescheduled and completed their interview after being rescheduled.

The Outcome

By the end of the study, Qualitative had recruited 12 participants who were currently employed as Mathematics professors. 8 of the participants were from 4-year universities, 3 were from community colleges, and 1 was from an online university. 7 of the participants were professors, 1 was an adjunct professor, 2 were associate professors, and 2 were assistant professors. There were 6 females and 6 males. All participants were U.S. residents. 6 participants were from the East Coast, 1 was from the West Coast, and 5 were from the middle of America.
